couplets (ashaar) on Urdu, as promised Next week's

shahad-va-shakkar se shiiriin urduu zabaaN hamaarii
hotii hai jis ke bole miThii zubaaN hamaarii

urduu hai jis kaa naam hamiin jaanate hain "Daag"
saare jahaaN men dhuum hamaarii zubaaN kii hai

nahiin khel ai "Daag" yaaron se kah do
ke aatii hai urduu zubaaN aate aate

guftaguu reKhate men ham se na kar
ye hamaarii zubaan hai pyaare

reKhataa ke tum hii ustaad nahiin ho "Ghalib"
sunate hain agale zamaane men koii Miir bhii thaa

gesuu-e-urduu abhii talak paziir-e-shaanaa hai
shamaa pe saudaaii-e-soz-e-dil paravaanaa hai

[gesuu = hair; abhii talak = still; paziir = accepting; shaanaa = shoulder]
[saudaaii = insane/in a frenzy; soz = passion/heat/burning]


Daal de jaan maa'nii men vo urduu ye hai
karavaTen lene lage tabaa vo pahaluu ye hai

sach agar bolaa to rishte TuuT kar rah jaayenge
jin men urduu soii hai lafzon kii chaadar taan kar
kuchh dinon men un kitaabon ke "cover" rah jaayenge
